ABOUT

Johanna Benainous is a French visual artist, photographer and filmmaker, born in Paris in 1991. She graduated with highest honours from the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2015, and also studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Her practice combines photography, video, sound, staging and installation. Each project unfolds as its own world, built around identity, costume and the figure of the other. Portraiture sits alongside still life and landscape, treated as presences in their own right.

In 2025, MAC VAL commissioned The Other Me, shown at the museum the same year. In 2026, she presents Phenomenologia, a photographic and sound installation, in “Moteur Imaginaire”, the inaugural exhibition of Large on the Île Seguin, curated by Cecilia Alemani, and directs the film The Beginning for Aure. With Elsa Parra, she is creating La Grande Échappée, a work commissioned by the Société des grands projets for the future Bry-Villiers-Champigny station of the Grand Paris Express, in tandem with architect Thomas Richez.

In 2014, she co-founded the duo Elsa & Johanna with Elsa Parra. Winner of the public prize at the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography in 2019, finalist for the Louis Roederer Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles in 2020, and selected for the official artistic posters of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the duo has exhibited at the Salon de Montrouge, MAC VAL, Paris Photo, the Studio of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe, Mai Mano House in Budapest, the Institut français de Tokyo and the 17th Lyon Biennale. Their work is held in the collections of the Cnap, Paris Collections, the Palais Galliera and the Villa Noailles, and is the subject of several monographs, including Ce que vaut une femme (The Eyes, 2022).
